Based in Newport Beach, California, Urchins was inspired by the need for chic hair accessories that go beyond the usual tortoise-shell model.

I started out making hair clips just as a hobby for those close to me, selecting different shells, crystals, and other materials to reflect their different styles and personalities. I loved seeing how such a simple accessory, like a hair clip, could transform someone's personal style. Friends began clamoring for hair clips, and soon after their friends began requesting them. It was then that I decided to start my company in order to reach a broader group of people.

Having grown up near the beach, the ocean has always been a central part of my life. I played around with shells as decorative material, and realized I could make them look chic and luxurious by drawing attention to their texture and design. I've always loved how women are able to effortlessly throw together a stylish look, and the crystal designs are inspired by that sort of casual, and playful glamour. Our clips allow women to add an element of adornment without overdoing it.

Each hair clip is handmade. The technology of the hair clip is key to the design. Just patented, there is nothing else like it out there. It allows the person wearing the clip to replace the elastic band when it becomes worn, when the color needs to be changed, or when a thinner or thicker band is needed.
